Design System Engineer

Build the design systems that let SaaS products scale, and make sure what’s designed in Figma is exactly what ships in code.

What you’ll do:

  • Audit existing systems and codebases and establish the facts: what is used, what is duplicated, where design and code have drifted apart.
  • Define token architecture (color, typography, spacing, motion, theming) and keep it in sync between Figma and code.
  • Build accessible, well-documented component libraries in React or the client’s framework of choice.
  • Set up the tooling around the system: Storybook, visual regression testing, versioning and release workflows.
  • Document every component, its usage rules and the decisions behind it, so teams can trace why the system works the way it does.
  • Define governance with client teams: how new components are proposed, reviewed, contributed and deprecated.
  • Make the system ready for AI-assisted development, so code generated by AI tools follows it instead of working around it.
  • Measure adoption and consistency across products, and report progress against the goals agreed with the client.

What we’d like to see:

  • 4+ years building or maintaining design systems or component libraries for complex products.
  • Strong TypeScript, React and modern CSS, with a sharp eye for interaction detail.
  • Deep experience with design tokens and Figma variables, and with keeping design and code in sync.
  • Solid knowledge of accessibility (WCAG 2.2) and how to build it into components by default.
  • Experience with Storybook, testing and release workflows for shared libraries.
  • Everyday use of AI tools: generating and refactoring components, writing documentation, auditing codebases, and judging where the output can be trusted.
  • Experience connecting design systems to AI coding tools, for example through Figma Dev Mode or MCP.
  • Can explain design intent to engineers and technical constraints to designers.
  • Business-level English.

Nice to have, but not required:

  • Multi-brand or multi-theme design systems.
  • Style Dictionary, Tokens Studio or similar token pipelines.
  • Contributions to open-source design systems.

Why working with us will be a great fit:

  • Smart projects first. Work that sparks curiosity and rewards clear thinking, from concept to polished execution.
  • Paid AI tools. Use what helps you do your best work. We cover it.
  • No bureaucracy. Clear briefs, structured support, fast feedback. Meetings only when they matter.
  • Global clients, close team. Clients across the US and Europe, and a tight-knit team that values autonomy, clarity and good humor.
  • Room to grow. Regular design reviews, 1-on-1 mentorship and internal knowledge sharing.

Recruiting process:

  1. Recruiter screen
  2. Technical interview
  3. Offer

Show us how you structured the system, how teams adopted it and how you use AI tools in your work.
